好(hǎo) attached to a <verb> make that verb good to <verb>. So 好看(hǎokàn) is good to see. So if we were to say 这个女人很好看 (Zhège nǚrén hěn hǎokàn) it more or less means "this woman is pretty".

Thank you for your postings. Both of you are right. I think good-looking is a better translation.
