吃饭 (chīfàn) = to eat (rice)
Actually, a lot of verbs in Chinese require objects, i.e. you cannot simply say "I eat" wǒchī (我吃). The word 饭 (fàn) is most likely acting as a dummy object. So, saying 我在吃饭 (wǒ zài chīfàn) translates to "I am eating".
