Usage of 向

Hello everyone, I had a few questions regarding the usage of 向, which appears in lesson 3.1 Catching A Ride: http://members.rocketlanguages.com/lessons/261 According to this lesson, 向 can be translated to english as "to". In this lesson, it is used as 你可以向我推荐。。。 which means "Can you recommend to me...". I understand clearly the usage of 向 in this sentence, and was wondering if using 向 in the following sentences would be correct as well: - 向 [name]: (This is the typical introduction used when writing a letter, if you understand the context I'm trying to imply ). - 给向谁?: (Give to whom? ) - 你可以向我唱歌吗 ? (Can you sing to me?) - 你可以向他给这个吗 ? (Can you give this to him?) And this list goes on and on, I will think of more sentences. But they generally follow the same pattern as the ones above. Thanks in advance

你好Jaime! The first sentence you provide, if you would like to use the word 向, you will need to change the word order to - 向谁给… To be honest, the word 向 is not used a lot in these contexts, it is used more for the movement of object or people i.e. 他向外边走。 Although the following two sentences are grammatically correct, they sound a little odd and I will provide some alternatives. - 你可以向我唱歌吗? - 你可以给我唱歌吗? this is much more natural and you are more likely to hear this. - 你可以向他给这个吗? - 你可以给他这个吗? Once again, the word 向 is used more for physical movement as opposed to directing transitive verbs. If you do want to use it however, just remember the word order: 向 + somebody/something + verb I hope this helps, - Lin Ping
