Has anyone else been fascinated by the subleties of the french language?
Talking to some french persons I noticed a difference in the way of the communication and find that quite fascinating. It is somehow expected to read between the lines, so the french don't say everything out loud as one is used to in english or german. I call that the macro level of conversation, the contextual part.
Meanwhile in the french grammar everything is extremely precise.
For example in the definite meanings of different past tenses (passé composé vs. l'imparfait) and how you use them.
Or pronouns: they are often required, even in second halfs of sentences, refering to the Object in the first half, while the connection is very clear.
Doing my spaced repetition I came across a phrase from earlier in the course:
Avez-vous un numéro de téléphone où l'on peut vous joindre ?
The l' is the pronoun for “téléphone” and would not be used in german or englisch.
Do you have a telephone number where we could reach you?
I find this contrast in precision in the syntax compared to the expected reading between the lines in conversations fascinating.
