Pronunciation of: 'en retard'.

I have a question about the pronunciation of the expression: ‘en retard’. I notice that Paul pronounces this: ‘en rer tarh’. However, in the course French Speed Learning, this is pronounced: ‘ah tarh’. The ‘en’and the ‘rer’ all seem to blend into one ‘ah’. I have heard this pronunciation in French movies too. Are both used, or is one pronunciation more accurate than the other?

Paul pronounces words slowly, so he enunciates more of the syllables, Eric and Anne go a bit faster in Premium Plus, and Eric and Julie go even faster in Platinum (Julie also did the Survival kit modules, so if you've tried those, you can get a sense of her speech speed). The more conversational speed would be closer to the latter (like "ah-rh tahr"), where a syllable would flow into the next. Both pronunciations are correct though.

Bonjour! Yes, when we say 'en retard' we often tend up mashing the two words together and getting something that sounds quite different. It is normal though and just have to remember that French isn't necessarily spoken the same way it is written. Keep it up! - Marie-Claire
