9.2: nach dem Abitur

Peter--252

Peter--252

In Lesson 9.2 at ~1 min 27s into the lesson, Sandra says (I think) "Nach dem Abi' war ich ein Jahr lang in Afrika."

The script has the full word Abitur, and when Matthias says it in the vocabulary he also says the full word.

Would Abi' be a common abbreviation for this word in spoken German?

Hallo Peter--252,

yes, you're absolutely right, Abi is the abbreviation for Abitur. This word is especially very common among younger people.

Viele Grüße
Julia

Hallo Julia,

Vielen Dank für die Antwort.     Das habe ich mir gedacht!

No doubt all languages have their colloquial shortenings; I'll keep my eyes & ears sharp for any more examples!
Viele Gruße,

Peter

Is really interesting to know about  the abbreviation of some german words.

Is there some abbreviation for the word Freund?

Hallo HugoM5,

unfortunately there isn't an abbreviation for the word "Freund" in spoken German. Here are some other common ones:
"Universität" / "Uni" - "university"
"Demonstration" / "Demo" - "protest"
"Diskothek" / "Disko" - "disco"
"Alkoholiker" / "Alki" - "alcoholic"

Grüße,

Julia
