Can ChatGPT help with learning German?

I have tried translating some English text in to German but I have had a problem getting it corrected. I just put a page of my German into ChatGPT and asked it to correct it. It said it could understand what I had written but had a few suggestions to improve it. It cleaned up some of my clunky German phrases in a few places, changed some word order, and suggested different translations for a few words. I showed the result to a native German speaker and they said the result was pretty decent German.

I found that looking at the changes was quite instructive, so perhaps ChatGPT can be a useful learning tool.

HI Simon

Chatted to Philip and my son about this all. I don't have a clue :)
I didn't know what you were talking about until this came up in conversation. Suddenly remembered this post. They said not a great idea or that it will be particularly effective, but who knows I will say we were watching a YouTube video translated from German to English. So funny as it was totally inacurate and really made us laugh in places.

Hi Maxie, I usd ChatGPT for a very specific thing. I had translated an English version of the Grimms fairy tale Hansel and Getel back into German. I found it pretty hard going even with a dictionary and grammar book. I also used Dundens proof reader which can check spelling and some grammar, but it's not foolproof. Then I asked ChatGPT to correct my German. It said it could understand my German, but could offer some improvements.

I showed the result to a native German speaker and they said that the result was pretty good German. ChatGPT did things like turning any clumsy German phrases into good German and changing round word order. I though it was quite instructive, at least on a simple story.

In the absence of a German teacher to do the corrections, it seemed like a good option.

Hi Simon

Wow, I'm impressed. You obviously go the extra mile. As for me I want to be understood and vocabulary is key for me. I am thrilled that you suggested Deutsche Welle, as I am understanding more and more of their news letter. I also use them for news, but in English.

Canadian news is awful and just can't be bothered to watch it. Centered around north America and not much international news. So have resorted to other sources.

Hope you have a lovely Christmas if you celebrate Christmas. We do and it is a bit chaotic. So I retreat and do language, when I can

Hi Again, Simon

Does sound like fun, especially a 2 year old. We trump you in chaos. 4 of ours, 2 boyfirends and a friend. No small children, but 3 dogs too. 7 staying in our house. lots of fun though and Philip loves the British show Task master. So he palns rediculous tasks with the most fabulous prizes, and all take part, which adds to the chaos and mess.

It is exhausting, but I am blessed to have them here.

Enjoy your time with the family
