Hallo Robindale und Alle,. OK, Here goes. Please feel free to suggest corrections and ask for clarifications if what I tried to write doesn't quite make sense. Ich bin Midwest geboren und aufgewachsen. Ich war in Wisconsin gebornen, sondern als ein Kind zog nach South Dakota für ein paar Jahre, bevor wieder in Bewegung, dieses Mal nach Iowa. Ich zog nach Minnesota, aus beruflichen Gründen, als ich ein junger Mann war und habe seitdem dort gelebt. Wir haben zwei Häuser, ein in Plymouth (Vorort von Minneapolis) und ein andere in Duluth. Außer Alaska und ein paar andere, habe ich allen Staaten in USA gereist. Ich habe Europa, einschließlich Deutschland, mehrere Male besucht und habe zweimal in Indien gewesen. Meine Lieblings Urlaub war eine Reise entlang des Rheins von Heidelberg nach Amsterdam. Wir übernachteten in mehreren Orten, einschließlich einem Hotel, das einst ein altes Schloss war. Es war toll! Wir Minnesotans klagen häufig über das Wetter, neun Monate Winter und zwei Monate des schlechten Wetters, aber es hat eine gute Lebensqualität. Wir werden wahrscheinlich hier bleiben, auch wenn meine Frau in den Ruhestand ist. Allerdings, haben wir jedenfalls mehr reisen plannen. Ein Platz ganz oben auf unserer Liste ist New Zealand.

Hallo Robindale, Byron und Alle My turn for a kick at the can: Ich bin in Nova Scotia geboren und wurde kurz nach meiner Geburt angenommen. Mein nueur Vater war bei der Marine deshalb ich habe in vielen verschiedenen Städten gelebt: Halifax Nova Scotia, Washington DC, Ottawa Ontario, Dartmouth Nova Scotia and Victoria BC. Ich habe die meisten meiner Kindheit in Victoria verbracht. Nachdem ich Universität beendet habe, ich habe in südlichen England seit zwei Jahren gelebt. Jetzt lebe ich auf einer kleinen Insel von der Ostseite der Vancouver Island. Diese kleine Insel gefällt mir sehr gut. Sie ist sehr schön, mit Seen und Wanderwegen. Ich lebe in der Nähe einer Indianerreservat. Es gibt ein erstklassiges Museum auf dem Reservat mit vielen repatriierten Schätzen. Die Indianer besitzen auch ein Ferienort-Hotel (Tsa-Kwa-Luten Lodge), wo ich viele Jahre lang als Angestellete an der Rezeption gearbeitet habe. Jetzt ich bin im Ruhestand und ich arbeite im Garten! Wie ist das Wetter hier? Der Sommer ist mild und sonnig und der Winter ist kalt und feucht (normalerweise mit sehr wenig Schnee). Im Frühling und Herbst bekommen wir viele Windstürme. Ich denke, dass unser Wetter nach Seattle Washington ähnlich ist. Shannon

Jetzt studiere ich Mathematik an der hiesigen Uni. Ja, ich weiß, das ist eine seltsame Kombination, aber mir gefällt sie. :) Oh, ich bin übrigens nicht 14. Das wurde an meinen Namen einfach rangehängt. So, damit ihr hier niecht einfach nur schreibt - das ist auch gut, und ihr lernt beim schreiben mehr als wenn ihr nur pasiv konsumiert, aber feedback ist trotzdem gut - gibt's hier mal ein paar kleine Anmerkungen zu dem, was ihr hier so gerschrieben habt. Das soll euch nur helfen, ist also absolut nicht böse gemeint: "Hallo Alle!" => "Hallo an alle!", denn "alle" ist keine Anredeform. "Das Thema der Woche ist Ihre Stadt und Ihren Staat." => ".. Ihr Land" Land ist hier besser als Staat, da letztere nur das politsche Gebilde beschreibt, aber nicht die Landschaft, Menschen, .... Ansonsten wäre es auch "Ihr Staat". Wer oder was ist das Thema? Der Staat. (Nominativ). "Gibt es dort irgend Museum oder Sehenwuerdigkeit?" => "irgend ein Museum oder eine S." besser: "Gibt es dort Museen oder andere Sehenswürdigkeiten?" This "any" sounds very desperate. Like Is the ANY museum? ANYTHING???? " etwas ander (andere?)?" => "etwas anderes" "Sagen ein bischen ueber das (dazu? darueber?)." => Sagen Sie etwas dazu // Erzählen Sie ein wenig darüber!" Hi Byron My handy-dandy Langenscheidt German/English dictionary defines "passabel" as 'passable' when used as an adjective and 'reasonably well' when used as an adverb. So I would say Andy thinks what we've written here is reasonably good. As as starting point, I'll take it! I hope you didn't think my "ha ha ha" was rudeness. I laughed so hard when I read your comment about a temperature of zero being a cool, late summer's evening that I couldn't think of anything else to say. :) Shannon

Hoffentlich wird sich das mit der Zeit und Praxis verbessern! I have a couple of questions: 1) if "Stürme" = wind storm, how do you distinguish between wind storms, rain storms, thunder storms and lightening storms? They're all quite different. 2) I used the term "Indianer" to describe Canadian native people but First Nations (or First People) is the correct way to refer to them. The term Indian is not particularly polite but it was the best I could do with my limited German vocabulary. Can you suggest something better? Hi Shannon and Andy, I thought the phrase might have meant something like that. I couldn't even find "passabel" in my little dictionary. Google translated it as "Well that does it already passable." No, I wasn't offended at all. On the contrary, I was hoping you'd get a kick out of it. As my mother used to say about my uncle, he never let the truth get in the way of a good story, although truthfully, we do quite frequently get a hard frost by mid September. Daher macht es wenig Sinn, auf Deutsch von Windstürmen zu reden. Das wäre wie wind winds or storm storms. Ein Sturmtief mit ergiebigen Regenschauern ist eine Wetterlage, bei der man beides hat: Strum und Regen. Es gibt Schneestürme und Sandstürme. Diese sind ebenfalls starke Luftbewegungen, aber im Zusammenhang mit starkem Schneefall oder aufgewirbelten Sandwolken. Thunder storm heißt auf Deutsch Gewitter. Da gibt's nicht nur thunder (Donner) sondern auch lightnings (Blitze). Wir unterscheiden nicht zwischen thunder storm und lightning storm (actually I have not heard the second one in English either), weil Blitz und Donner immer zusammen auftreten. Ist das Gewitter sehr weit weg, kann es mal vorkommen, dass man zwar Blitze sieht, aber keinen Donner hört. Das heißt aber nicht, dass es keinen Donner gibt. Er ist nur zu weit weg, um noch gehört zu werden. Ein Trockengewitter kommt ohne Regen aus. Wir machen uns da nicht ganz so viele Gedanken, wie ihr. Du kannst, wenn du nicht Indianer sagen willst, das Wort Ureinwohner verwenden, welches wir für First Nations, Australian Aborigines, Maori, Inuit, Ainu, .... verwenden. Streng genommen, fallen Inuit nicht unter den Begriff Indianer. Es gibt aber nur das Wort Indianerreservation, nicht Ureinwohnerreservation. Indianer is not considered impolite in German. Hi Andy Thank you for the video link. There was a lot I couldn't understand, but I least when I listened I heard individual words and not just a blur of sound. it was even harder at the beginning when both French and German were being spoken at the same time. I noticed one mistake: MicMac is pronounced MigMaw. Hoppla! Ich bin in eine "False Cognate" (falsche verwandte ???) Falle gefallen. Ich habe dedacht,dass Stürm = storm. Kannst du erklären, etwas anderes? Sometimes "there is/are" is translated as "es ist" and sometimes I see "es gibt". How can I know which one to use? I have also seen "es steht" used, but I assume stehen is reserved for something that is standing upright on top of something else. ie. "there is a vase on the table". ("Eine Vase steht auf dem Tisch") and "es legt" is for something lying on a surface. ie. the newspaper is on the table ("Die Zeitung legt auf dem Tisch"). Da laufen aber keine Serien wie CSI oder Mentalist, das läuft auf den privaten. Ich wusste gar nicht, dass MicMac MigMaw gesprochen wird. Aber viele wissen hier auch nicht, dass Arkansas ganz anders ausgesprochen wird als Kansas. Da man im Deutschen eigentlich immer so schreibt, wie man spricht, haben wir damit so unsere Probleme. Wir sprechen Kansas can-ses, und da Arkansas genauso geschrieben wird, nur mit "Ar-" davor, sprechen es hier viele are can ses und nicht are can saw. But how can one tell if the spelling doesn't tell it. "Kannst du erklären, etwas anderes?" => "Kannst du (mir) etwas anderes erklären?" "There is/are" is mainly "Es gibt", which means it exists. "Es ist" is often "it is". Less about existence than about a current state, like "Es ist warm." or "Es schneit (draußen)." The rest you have explained yourself already: something lying around results in "there is" being translated as "(Auf dem Tisch) liegt (eine Zeitung)", standinding => steht ("Auf dem tisch steht noch die Kaffeetasse. Bring sie mir bitte!). It's not its existence (There exists a cup on the table), but rather its current position. Generally "steht" is in upright position, "liegt" horizontally. MacLeod? Re MacLeod: no way can I explain it in German without making more mistakes than you'd be prepared to read! I was born Brenda Lundrigan (Lundrigan was my birth-mother's last name) and when I was adopted my name was changed to Shannon MacLeod (my adoptive parents were of Scottish and Irish descent). About seven years ago I found my birth family. My birth-mother and father eventually married each other and had six more children. My birth-family's last name is Myers (it was anglicized from Maillet by my great-grandfather when he moved his family to an English-speaking community. He was trying to avoid some of the prejudice against the French.) So....not so Scottish after all. Call it "false advertising". :) English can often be difficult to figure out. Someone had to tell me how to say MicMac properly...you would think that if English and French speakers were going to transcribe Native words, they would spell them the way they sound and not the way they look! Then there are English words that sound the same but have different meanings: pear, pare and pair. Or words that are spelled wildly differently but pronounced the same: through and threw. It's enough to drive a person to drink! Ich habe "The Mentalist" nie angeschaut. Ich verwende nur Live-Streaming und einen Film-Streaming Dienst. Und woher stammt der Name Lundrigan? This one now sounds like Lord of the Rings. ;) Ich hab auf fb mal nach dir gesucht. Da gibt's aber mehrere Treffer für den Namen. Wohnst du in London, Ontario? Ja, auf gewisse Art ist Mathe eine Sprache. Gleichzeitig ist es aber auch eine Kunst. Man beschreibt ja nicht nur die Welt, sondern man löst Probleme, sucht Wege und Verbindungen zwischen verschiedenen Gebnieten, und Verallgemeinerungen, also den Kern hinter der offensichtlichen Realität. diesbezüglich ist Mathematik wie Philosophie. Und wegen der logischen und überprüfbaren, objektiven Herangehensweise ist es eine exakte Wissenschaft. Kurz und gut: Mathe hat von allem etwas. :) Und? Hattet ihr nen Stromausfall? Mein letzter Stromausfall ist viele Jahre her. Mindestens 19 Jahre. Ich weiß, dass es als ich klein war bei Gewitter manchmal einen Stromausfall gab. Hi everybody, I couldn't find that word,Gebnieten, in my dictionary or in Google either. Is it perhaps a typo and should be Gebieten? That would make sense I think. Otherwise, I think I have the gist of Andy's remarks, but a translation would be nice. You guys are getting pretty deep, philosophy and mathematics. Well, I do have a degree in mathematics myself and I think I might have taken a philosophy course, so I will try to keep up. As to literature, I've read quite a bit. I was a child before TV and video games and so I became a reader and still am. I'll try to write the next response in German, but I'm a little short on time today. Als ich an der Universität studierte, war ein Nebenfach nicht nötig. Damals, man musste eine Fremdsprache für zwei Jahren studieren, bevor man graduieren konnte (vielleicht, es ist heute anders). Während dem dritten Jahr meines Studiums, habe ich mein Interesse an Philosophie entdeckt. ``Literatur ist jedoch nicht so mein Ding` Mathe ist jedoch nicht so mein Ding Ich denke, dass die beiden Fächer sind nur im Grunde verschiedene Möglichkeiten, um die gleichen Probleme zu lösen. Different approaches for different people...maybe it`s a right-brain vs left-brain thing. Hello Byron If you ever come across a good recipe for rye bread, please share it. I make my own bread all the time but don`t have much luck when I try to bake with rye (or rye blended with other flours that have more gluten content). My rye bread is fine for throwing at the herons when I want to scare them away from the pond, but nothing I`d want to eat very often--and certainly not before swimming. Happy Baking Shannon

Hi Shannon, Robin, and Andy, I was taught to put a comma before "and", but I am definitely old school. I understand now it is optional. So many things have changed over the years. English, at least in America, is definitely evolving. I expect German is as well. When I first studied it in school it still had the old type face. I've got some old German readers of my mother's that are almost a hundred years old, pre WWI. Interesting stuff! There are pictures of young men proudly displaying dueling scars. I understand it was pretty popular a hundred years ago particularly among the military men. They would fight duels at the least provocation, usually not to the death, but until they got "satisfaction" which involved shedding some blood. Zu diesem Thema lese ich eine gute Kurzgeschichte, in Deutsch, von Arthur Schitzler, "Lieutenant Gustl". Es wurde vor über 100 Jahren veröffentlicht. As for baking, I am still very much a beginner. I use a regional, high gluten bread flour milled from North Dakota hard red spring wheat. My recipe is for a blended all purpose flour so I have to adjust the water to flour ratios and the rise times. So far, I've only made a basic white bread and an egg bread. Hallo Byron Hmmmmm. Nur uns zwei huete! Robin muss beschäftig sein und vielleicht Andy`s Probeabonnement wird beendet. Es gibt nichts besser als frisches gebackenes Brot! Lecker! although there are times when I rely more on black magic than chemistry! I`m not shy about messing with a recipe to get what I want. I start with white AP flour but add in wheat bran and ground flax (and sometimes dried onion). I use potato water instead of water and a mix of skim milk and butter milk instead of regular milk. I ordered a new grammar book from amazon.ca today (I got tired of not being able to string a coherent sentence together). It looks like I will be able to download `Lieutenant Gustl`from the Harold B. Hi Shannon, I got my book as a dual language reader "Five Great German Short Stories/Fünf Deutsche Meister Erzählungen".. "Lieutenant Gustl" is in a conversational, stream of concious style and so being conversational, it is easier to understand than some of the other stories. I didn't have to rely on the translation as much. I try not to cheat too much and figure it out on my own, but when you can't, it's easier than looking up the words. Plus, it's really interesting to see how the literal German meaning is put into English in a way that captures the original style and cadence. I like dual language books for that reason. You should be able to order it from Amazon as well. Maybe you can give me some tips on bread making. I was thinking about making a flax bread. Suggestions? regards, Byron

Hi Byron I found a nifty book in a local second hand book store called :Der Weg zum Lesen". It has about 20 short stories (some from authors I know, but most are new to me) all in German. They range from a couple of pages long at the beginning of the book up to maybe 6 pages long. The story runs on one side of the page and there are vocabulary explanations on the facing page. At the end of each story there's a set of exercises...some on verb constructions and some that require sentence formation. I have a duel language book of Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" but it's on my e-reader which makes it hard to flip back and forth to see how the two stories compare. I'm much happier with a print and paper book in any language! The only thing I like about the e-reader is being able to pack an entire library around in one small device. I like what a friend of mine calls "light-brown bread" better than straight white, so I replace 1/2 cup to 3/4 of a cup of the white flour with a mix of wheat bran and flax and that works well for me. I haven't tried making anything heavier than that. You really just have to play around with it a bit until you find what works for you. I make small batches (only two loaves at a time) which makes kneading less stressful on my wrists. Shannon

Hi Shannon, That book sounds pretty cool. I've got an old German reader, copyright 1933, that I found in a second hand book store. The fables and stories are interesting, not at all like today's children's books. I like my e-reader for the same reason you gave, but also because you can get older books, the classics, for next to nothing, sometime free. Even the new releases are now a lot cheaper in e-reader form since that lawsuit against Amazon and the publishing companies. I'm going to try your bread making suggestion. I make small batches too. My recipe makes about 3 8x4 loaves. That will last the two of us over a week. Since I've started making bread, toast is my new favorite bedtime snack. I should write something in German, but I'm too lazy today to compose. Actually, I have company and don't have the time. I just snuck away for a few minutes to check my emails. regards, Byron

Hi Shannon, Natürlich, ich mag Musik. Allerdings bin ich nicht leidenschaftlich darüber. Damit meine ich, dass ich nicht kaufen eine Menge Alben oder eine Menge Konzerte besuchen, Ich mag auch klassische Musik, zum Beispiel, Bach, Beethoven und Mozart. Meine Lieblings-klassischen Stück ist Canon in D von Johann Pachelbel. Ich weiß, es ist ein bisschen von einer Hochzeit Klischee, aber dennoch ich denke, es ist eine schöne Melodie. Für weitere modernen Zeiten den siebziger Jahren (noch alten to many), ich mochte richtig sehr die Band Queen. Freddy Mercury war ein tolles Talent. Heute bin ich mir nicht sicher. Es gibt immer noch die Klassiker natürlich. Aber die moderne, ich weiß es nicht. Ich denke, ich bin ein alter Knacker (as in geezer or fogey, not cracker, because I am not rascist) . Ich hasse Hip Hop und Rap. Nie gemocht Disco. Ich mochte Billy Joel. Adele hat eine schöne Stimme. Die meiste Zeit im Auto drehe ich das Radio aus. Byron

Hi Shannon, Ich hörte dieses Lied. Schönes Lied! Joe Mills hat eine sehr schöne Stimme. Ich mochte Gordon Lightfoot auch und Songs dieses Genres. Ich war jung in den sechziger Jahren, und ich liebte Folk-Rock - ,"Peter, Paul und Mary", "Mamas und Papas", "The Seekers", und viele andere. Kann nicht vergessen, die Beatles. Ich denke, die Musik unserer Jugend ist das Beste. So viele schöne Erinnerungen. Dennoch stimmen die meisten Kritiker den sechziger Jahren war ein großer Generation für Musik.
