German intonation difficulties

Hello fellow German veterans,

I struggle considerably with the german intonation which has barely if ever, been discussed in sufficient detail in the level 1 (I haven't reached level 2 or 3 yet so I don't know what is taught there). Being a non-westerner, this makes my recorded pronunciation extremely foreign with a strong south-east asian accent (my speaking seems off but I can't find out why). What resources (that address this issue) can guide me towards speaking more like natives?

Thanks.

Hi Daniel

Some of the recordings are off I think anyway. I say things which I think sound accurate and it shows as incorrect. Especially anything involving numbers. I have just learnt to ignore it. But it drives me a bit crazy, and I keep on trying to correct it. No such luck and it may be my accent.

We lived in South East Asia for 15 years. Brunei and Singapore and still miss living there. Especially the food. Live on Vancouver Island now. One thing I don't miss is the humidity, heat was okay, but found the humidity challenging. Oh and I miss swimming in very warm water, never swim here it is just too cold

Happy learning

Hallo DanielC163 und Sebongela,

Thank you for your question! How long have you been learning German DanielC163? Are there any words, letters or sounds you struggle with more than with others? The good news is that there are lots of things you can do to help with your pronunciation - most of all practise, practise and then practise some more!

Here is a great article with lots of helpful tips and tricks to help you sound more like a native speaker:

Germans say “Übung macht den Meister.” - “Practice makes perfect.” (or literally “Practice makes the master.”) so it's mostly a matter of surrounding yourself with the language and speaking it as much as you can :)

Hope this helps!

Tschüss!

Julia
