I need

In one of the lessons about opening a bank account, the term "dann brauchte ich..." was used. The "t" sound is something I have not heard before. Is there a difference between "ich brauche" and "ich brauchte"-is one right and one incorrect? Thanks!

Hi Tom, Of course our native speaker has the final word, but I looked it up and it seems to imply the subjunctive, i.e. I would need, versus I need even though it isn't translated that way. The conjugation tables I saw don't show it umlauted. Some articles I browsed say the umlauted form is a regional difference.
