I have started watching YouTube videos in German. Cooking, tiny houses and even RV videos. Sometimes they have subtitles that are so funny and totaly inaccurate. Had me rolling with laughter, but even so the German was a good exercise in listening.

So am trying to switch it up as sometimes I get really bored with the usual. I feel it is good to listen to native speakers at a normal speaking pace too.

If you have netflix, there is a comedy cooking show called “Nailed It, Germany". Amatuer cooks try to make impossibly difficult fancy cakes.  It is very trashy but if you like cooking shows …

Hi Simon

Try and watch all sorts of things, so will see what it is like. We have Canadian Nettflix which is even different to the U.S.A, but will look for it anyway. I don't per se watch a lot of cooking shows, but have watched one on “pflaumen kuchen” and understood quite a bit of that. Philip is the baker in the family and he has perfected the Portuguese “Pasteis de Nata” Trial and error as everyone puts their recipes on YOU Tube and some are a disaster. Started watching a series about the police in post war Germany, but I find violence stressfull, so am not going to watch that one.

Take care

I think you may be talking about a series called “The Defeated”, which is a mixture of German and English. I thought it was quite a good story but has some very unpleasand stuff in it including torture scenes.

If you have Netflix, I enjoyed a series call “Charite” set in a hospital in Berlin. there are two series, one at the end of the 19thC and the other at the end of WW2. They are fictional stores against a background of real characters. The dialogue is slower than a lot of shows set in modern times. But pehaps I liked it as I am from a medical background.

If you search for German series or films there is quite a lot of stuff on Netfix, at least in the UK. I enjoyed a film called look who's back (Er ist wieder da). A film in which Hiter wakes up in modern times and is mistaken for a comedan impersonating Hitler. It's gone from UK netflix, but maybe you have it.

Have you discovered "Language Reactor”, it's a chrome app an displays subtitles in both the target language and English. It works on Netflix and Youtube.

There is also a side panel which shows recent and future phrases and you can single step through phrases.

I have used it a bit but on netflix, the German subtitles are often not very accurate so what is said doesn't always match the subtitles.
