When do you use "chiedere" and when do you use "domandare"?

Hi AR,

In everyday speech they are used as synonyms. However, there is a subtle difference between the two:

You use domandare when you want to know something (eg. an information).
Mi domando dove sia. I wonder where it is.

You use chiedere when you want something (eg. a favor, a glass of water, a book...).
Posso chiederti di chiudere la finestra? May I ask you to close the window?

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the clear explanation of the subtle, but important, distinction between these two verbs!
