Toscana movie

Ciao a tutti

Started watching a movie called “Toscana” on Nettflix. A Danish film. Put on Italian language and English subtitles. Not finished watching it, but the Italian is good and the scenery lovely,(well so far anyway). The voice over seems to fit well too. Watched half of another “The Perfect Family” was annoying and overacted, but the Italian was fairly simple for my level anyway. Not sure I have the patience to watch the rest of it though, but the Italian listening is always a good idea

Thanks for that, Sebongela.  I've just added it to my watch list.  As you say, listening to Italian is important.

Hi Chris M108

Give up on the movie. English subtitles were intermittent. The English voice over just didn't have a feeling of Italy. I wanted the gist of the film with English subtitles and then can listen to it only in Italian. There were no Italian subtitles, so will look for something else.

Ciao.

What a great idea for a thread! :)

I highly recommend the Rose Island (in Italian) - it's based on the true story of engineer Giorgio Rosa and the Republic of Rose Island (quite fascinating).

Looking forward to read more recommendations! :)

Thanks for the recommendation, Caterina.  For the benefit of newer subscribers, Il Postino is highly regarded as a classic.

Hi ChrisM108

Thanks Chris. Sadly I can't find that on Netflix. You suggested it to me way back and have still not watched it.

Thanks Caterina, will look for that one. In my down time I watch films and knit and am attempting to watch more in a foreign language. Have found some great ones in German too.

Hope the garden is coming together as planned

Ciao.

Hi Sebongela

It must be a regional Netflix thing, because they show it in the UK.  I bet there'll be other ways of being able to watch it.

The garden has come togther nicely, thanks.  There's always tweaking and maintenance to do though, as you know!

Thanks. I am having a real problem motivating myself to do any language at the moment and may take a short break from it all.

Some of the grammar concepts just wear me down. Believe it or not keep going back to level one grammar especially indirect object pronouns and then direct object pronouns and just seem not not get them straight in my head. It has become a sticking point, may eventually just say “ C'est la vie”, but I'm quite tenacious and I keep going back to them.

I think I may just concentrate on vocabulary, as when am listening to news so many gaps and I find that frustrating. I get the general gist, but not sure I'm improving in that quarter either.

What a moany post!

I think I need to look for an Italian speaker here in the valley to converse with. Having coffee with my Austrian friend so good for my German

Not at all, Sebongela.  Not many language learners avoid stages like that.  My recent learning has incorporated immersion, so why not watch or listen to, Italian.  It sounds illogical, but letting the sounds wash over you without trying to consciously understand, has major benefits.

A face-to-face language partner would be immensely beneficial. I'm finding it very difficult finding a Skype one that actually works for me.

Buona fortuna

Ciao Maxie

I watched Toscana today.  It has some wonderful views of the scenery and is a Scandi version (plot-wise) of Ridley Scott's “A Good Year”.  In balance, it's worth viewing, I reckon.

HI Chris

We don't have Nettflix anymore. Just became too pricey. My daughters were quite disappointed that we cancelled, as they used it more than we did. I loved the scenery. Philip has no desire to go to Italy, so may oneday go with my daughters. Not sure I can keep up with their enthusiastic pace, though. Need to find another source for Italian movies.

We now use Britbox and Acorn, as we like British shows. American ones are generally annoying, as almost always too sentimental for me. European shows are more real and true to life I find.

It is really cold here at night already, but that said we have sun which is unusual for this part of the world. So days are clear and cold. Quite like it, but it has been too cold to be in my garden

Still using Coffee Break for listening and learning.

A presto

I get that, Sharon.  We're in the process of cutting back on streamed services, driven by resentment of ‘to see this, you also need to subscribe to XYZ’.  They take us for saps, as we would have said in our New York days.  We watched a bit of  the new series of Frasier, and turned off after 15 minutes.  Pure schmaltz, and not a scratch on the original series.

Weather-wise, more rain to an already record year for rain, and now that autumn has set in, time to retreat from the garden.

Italian-wise, I currently focus (in priority order) Rocket, immersion (mainly podcasts) and some ‘easy books’.  The upside is that increasingly, I understand most of what native Italians (mostly northerners) say in videos.  Rocket works!

Take it easy e a presto.

Chris
