Passé simple just does not belong here, and especially should not be addressed before passé composé or imparfait, regardless of disclaimers. If it must stay in this primarily spoken language course, it should be moved to one of the very last lessons, perhaps even the last lesson at the end of Dashboard 3, reflecting its likely importance only to those who go to advanced levels of French literature studies.

Indeed, the passé simple is not often used and whether it should be included/where it should be placed is something that is going to be looked at as part of an upcoming review of the French courses.
