Voice recognition seems to have developed a problem

Hi, not sure about the category but I think it may be an IT problem:
For the last two or three days I have had a problem with the voice recognition in Chrome.
When trying to record it hangs the computer for 5-10 seconds (everything halts, e.g. my desktop clock) then continues, usually with the "unable to catch that phrase" message.

This used to happen perhaps once in ten or so occasions, which I was able to put up with, but now it happens about 9 out of ten times, which ruins the learning process.
I've tried it in Firefox, which works fine (records & plays back OK but lacks the voice recognition function) so I will use that for now.
I don't recall any updates to Chrome, but if the software uses Flash or Java then I have updated those, although that was some days before the problem started.

Has anyone else started having this problem, & does IT have any suggestions?

Hi Peter - Is this issue still happening? We just released a revamped voice recognition system in the last 48 hours or so. This should have rectified any issues. Although it is still a good idea to use the latest Chrome browser.

Still happening I'm afraid.
I sent an email to tech support, since two days ago the voice record function in Firefox had also stopped working properly (Marie G is aware of that and has replied).
Firefox is now working but Chrome voice recognition still keeps hanging.
Will try a restart again to see whether that has any effect.

I have to say I find the voice recognition system very idiosyncratic and glitchy.  At the moment, it seems to be cutting off the very last bit of what I'm saying (be it a word or a phrase).  There are occasions it doesn't 'catch' what I'm saying, despite now using a headphone mic.  And even on occasion, i will say something wrongly and yet get 100%.

Has this only started recently?
I'm trying to find out whether it's a site problem or my PC that's the problem.
Over the last few days though my PC has started behaving erratically, keeps stopping for several seconds (even if the CPU usage is low) so I'm starting to suspect it's my PC.
I'm not sure how to find that out for certain.

There may be a glitch in voice recognition as well, as I've noticed a few other complaints in the past.

The cutting off thing is very recent, yes.  I've also had the whole lesson go into 'hang' mode a few times within the past week or so, similar to what you describe.  Another thing that happens is that you try to speak but the icon jumps to the 'stop' position before you have chance to say anything.

Hi Jason & Meriel, I'm currently of the opinion that it's my PC that's the problem.  (Hope yours is ok Meriel.)

Over the last few days it has started freezing every so often in various applications, running slow, and then mysteriously speeding up to normal for a few minutes.
I have had it for quite a few years so it may be on its way out; I'll see how it goes from here.

Hi Meriel - Is it still doing this? We readjusted the algorithm behind the voice recognition so this should be resolved. Please let us know if it's still an issue.

Hi Peter - It could well be. Please let us know if the issue isn't resolved once you get your computer sorted out.

Jason - after my PC started getting slower & slower in various other apps, I finally "bit the bullet" & bought a new PC (after behind advised that it was past its sell-by date so to speak).

I'm struggling a bit setting up (I was on windows 7 & unfamiliar with Windows 10) but the voice problem has now disappeared for me.

Hope Meriel doesn't have to go through the same route!

Hi Peter - I am glad to hear it!

Hi both
The probs I have are intermittent; however, the clipping off of the end of what I'm saying is continuing fairly regularly.  My laptop isn't so old but, these days, I think computers get overloaded with who-knows-what programmes and bits of software running in the background, which seem to make them run inefficiently.  Hope you're happy with the new one Peter-252.

Oui merci.

Hope that was largely correct!  (And to "tutoyer" is ok?)

Should be "un nouvel ordinateur" of course!

Same thing is happening here. Starting a few days ago, many times I get the "Sorry I didn't catch that. Please try again" message, which was extremely rare before. I use two different computers with Google Chrome.

Peter 252, j'ai Chrome, et Windows 10.  Tutoyer - oui bien sûr.  We're all friends here.
Does Windows 10 seem to be resolving your problem?

Bonjour tout le monde.... It looks as though there is still an issue with the voice recognition in some instances. The latest version sped up the processing required but it seems to be overly reliant on Chrome being up to date and the users internet connection being 100% stable. So, it will be working for the vast majority of phrases, and we are working on a fix for the rest.

An update from me on this Jason, I've had a couple of days where the VR has been working absolutely fine.  Not sure if you've tweaked something but, if so, it seems to have had a positive effect.  Merci.

I ran into this exact issue beginning on 08/08. It started when Chrome automatically updated to release 60.0.3112.101. I downgraded Chrome back to version 59.0.3071.86 and disabled the update services and the problem was solved. It's currently working fine.

I use two systems; Windows 7 32 bit desktop and a Windows 10 64 bit notebook. The issue only expressed on the desktop.  The notebook is running the latest version of Chrome with no problems.

Hi all - Yes. we did make a "tweak" to the system. Essentially now it allows more recording/processing time, so hopefully this issue is resolved!

I am having the same problem.  I'm using a new headset.  I have no problem recording in Audacity, and in Rocket French it records but low volume with the "Sorry ..." message.

Just for the record (since I submitted the opening post) I no longer have the problem, so in my case it was the old PC which must have been the main cause.
As I mentioned above, shortly after experiencing the problems within Rocket, the PC started misbehaving intermittently in various different Apps.  I did all the usual checking for malware etc but there was nothing, and on professional advice decided that it was a hardware problem (it was a pretty old machine) & decided to get a new one.  (Not too traumatic as I'd been thinking of upgrading for a while.)

I sincerely hope that such a drastic solution isn't necessary for all the others!

Hi all - Last Friday we pushed out a slight change to how Rocket Record works. It's a little technical but essentially there shouldn't be any cutting off happening. If you still have this issue then please let us know.

Hi - This looks like an old thread but the issue reflects my current experience , I am new to the software and after one day of good  voice recognition on windows 7 using Google Chrome I now get 100%  "Sorry I didn't catch that. Please try again" . Tried a couple of USB headsets, a bluetooth headset    + an Analog microphone none of which resolved the issue.  The audio file sounds fine but there appears to be no analysis.

Moved to a windows 10 laptop with no success. The same symptoms as the above.

I have downloaded the app to a IPad and this works with no problem, but its not a solution to the issue as this is not my device.

I have even split the microphone output so one feed goes to the PC and the other to the IPAD, so the same audio but once again with Google Chrome the audio file is captured but the app comes back with "Sorry I didn't catch that. Please try again" whilst the IPad gives me 75% or 100% consistently .

Google Chrome is at the latest version , and both operating systems are at patched to the current level.

Any thoughts ?

Hi BarryL5,

I am sorry to hear you continue to have issues with the recording feature; we have gone ahead and sent you an email with some options.

Kind Regards.

I'm really struggling to get the voice recognition to work at all at the moment.    Either it starts off okay then crashes after a while or, like tonight, it simply isn't working at all.  Why are there so many glitches in the system Jason?  Can anything be done?

It's really frustrating.

Hi all - We have found an issue with a recent Google update to do with voice recognition, which has caused issues for some users. We are working, as a high priority, on a fix for this. I am sorry for the inconvenience and will keep you updated.
jason-oxenham-founder

Hi Meriel et al - After a week or so of searching we believe this was caused by a glitch with Google, which caused sporadic returns with the voice recognition system (we use a Google tool to provide the answers). Magically it appears to have righted itself! If you are still having issues then please let us know.
