Anybody else had trouble with 13.5 ?

Hello everybody,

I'm not complaining, since I like that this chapter introduces ways for more complicated phrases.

But I find this one extremely challenging and I fail miserably.

Maybe there are more difficult lessons ahead … probably

Has anybody else struggled with this?

One critic I might have here for the team is:
there are a few new words introduced like “les tiroirs”, “les avertisments” which have not been seen before in singular, so there is no way for us to know what gender they have, that we have to reflect on. ;-)

yikes :-D

  • Bonjour ArminZ,

I'm sorry to hear that you are finding things challenging but that's nothing we can't help with! Albeit with a little tardiness.

I see what you mean about the words which are most commonly used in the plural. At first glance it may not be obvious what their genders are but I'm going to explain how you can tell from more context within the sentence.

Lesson 13.5 discusses relative pronouns which must agree with whatever they are referencing in both gender and number. So, your examples in question were:
    Les tiroirs dans lesquels
  • Ces avertisements auxquels

From these sentences we can look at the relative pronouns and deduce the gender of the nouns they are refering to. Using the table below:

  • Les tiroirs dans lesquels … (les tiroirs is masculine, in singular it would be le tiroir)
  • Ces avertissements auxquels … (les avertissements is also masculine and in singular becomes l'avertissement)

I hope this helps,
