Nous nous

Could someone explain why there needs to be two nous in the following please? J’espère que nous nous arrêtons bientôt Thankyou

because the sentence is reflessive. which mean: i hope that we (we) shall stop soon.

Hello Anne! Yes,in fact french is a really hard language to study ,because it's extremely rich in his grammar,but also vocabulary.But grammar is really the nerve of war... I'm one of these froggy guy and I've thought to myself I have to go sometimes on these topics,to help foreigner with my language.(I am learning hindi there...) So the two "nous" (and I can understand it may be strange) are here to specify who we have to stop.Let us think the story takes place on the road(in car for exemple),this sentence induce that the subject,the people who drive is "we" which is indicated by the first "we". Still ok? Now comes the second "we",to indicate who we must stop(so here ourselves!),cause we could have stopped someone else(you,her ,them,the queen mother or anyone else you could imagine). Other exemples,and it could be write to any pronoun: J'espère que vous ne vous ennuirez pas:I hope you won't get bored The repetitions for a selfish pronoun like this case is only right for "nous" and "vous"(so 1st and 2nd plurial pronoun). For the 1st singular one ,we have :"je me"(if the following word begins by a consonant) "je m' " (if the following word begins with a vowel) ex: j'espère que je m'arrête bientôt

For the 2nd singular one,we have : "tu te" or "tu t' "(for the same reasons) ex: j'espère que tu t'arrêtes bientôt For the 3rd singular one,we have : "il se" or "il s' " (still same reasons) ex:j'espère qu'il s'arrête bientôt Then ,and finally,for the 3rd plurial one,we have: "ils se" "ils s' " (definitely for the same reasons hi,hi,hi) ex:j'espère qu'ils s'arrêtent bientôt. Julien, I can't write in French yet but thank you for explaining je/me, tu/te and il/se, etc. French grammar is very difficult! I vaguely remembered the reason for nous nous as the example "J’espère que nous nous arrêtons bientôt" means I hope we ourselves stop soon, the literal translation although English speakers don't do that. This is the best example; j'espère qu'ils s'arrêtent bientôt. I have been wrecking my brain where qu'ils and s'arrêtent come from in other sentences. Thank you, Mel
