on and nous

Is it ok to use 'on' instead on 'nous' when traveling in France for conversation?

Its not easy to translate the difference. 'Nous' is simply 'we'; specifically the group of people I am refering to. 'On' has a vaguer, general connotation, the group of people it applies to is rather less clear (& it can mean something more like 'generally', 'most people' - or it can just mean 'I' but avoids stating something as very specifically attributed to 'je') & it can add an degree of uncertainty, this can be changed, might not be so, in some expressions. So in many cases yes, its interchangeable; but not always, & the nuance can be different. Generally perhaps use 'nous' when its definite facts applying to 'us'; use 'on' if its a bit more fluid.

I'm a big fan of "on" - often a safe bet and easy to conjugate. I've also found it used when being asked nosy questions - "Are you dating so and so"?, for example. The answer is, "On parle, on se voit..." - we talk, we see each other...so very useful in that situation.

No one will blame you,if you use"on",it's not informal,no worry about it. "Nous" is considered as more polite,maybe more shy also,since it's more used between people that doesn't know each others. But nowadays,"on" is really much more used than "nous" in everyday life. I swear I don't remember the last time I use "nous" in my life,and I am a french native speaker!
