I’m looking for recommendations for a phonetic French workbook that can help with understanding and properly pronouncing words. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Bonjour DolbyD,
- Sorry for the late reply, but I thought I'd sned you something on the off chance you're still wanting to improve your French understanding and pronunciation.
First of all, if you want someone to take you through the French sounds in-depth then I'd recommend the following YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7YOYU38haY from Learn French with Lexie. This video is very comprehensive (over an hour) and takes you through all the possible sounds.
Apart from that, when it comes to understanding, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a workbook that would (by itself) help you leaps and bounds. What really makes the difference when it comes to understanding is listening and lots of it. Only with large quantities of listening does your brain really capture and process the language, and that can be difficult because naturally you're not going to understand a lot or everything all at once. But, I'm going to paste in a couple of YouTube channels below that you can explore for easy French listening. The great thing about these channels is that not only is the French relatively easy but you also get the visual aspects through the video which helps you underdtand what's going on.
https://www.youtube.com/@EasyFrench Great channel, subtitles etc. - https://www.youtube.com/@francaisavecnelly She is great and the videos feel quite personal, i.e. the content doesn't feel overly stripted or stilted.
- https://www.youtube.com/@FrenchmorningswithElisa This lady also has a long one hour video on pronunciation, ut her channel is full of great content.
Getting over the initial hump and then the various plateaus while language learning is the biggest challenge, but keep pushing through and listening and things will start to fall into place.
I hope this helps,
- Mitchell
