Placement of adjectives: Nous irons à Paris la première semaine vs Nous acheteron de vin rouge

VitN

It seems to me so natural to say, for instance -Nous acheteron de vin rouge - with the adjective after the noun.
Also it seems to me somewhat more natural to say  Nous irons à Paris la semain première.  Even so that I can think of cases where the adjective goes first witout any doubts.   Is there a clear rule for such decision where to place the adjective?

Thank you for advice,

How about this:
Nous irons à Paris la première semaine
and
Nous irons à Paris la semaine prochaine
???

I think you mean the "BANGS" rule (or sometimes, just "BAGS"): beauty, age, number, goodness, size. These adjectives go before the noun.

Salut VitN et toru e !

Pinning down the exact rules about adjective placement in French is tricky, especially since there are always exceptions! However, there are some guidelines, as toru e has laid out: most adjectives come after the noun in French, but most adjectives that fall within the acronym BAGS (or BANGS) will go before the noun.

For your sentence examples with Paris, VitN, there are some set word order rules here. Premier, being a number, usually goes before the noun:

Nous irons à Paris la première semaine.

The words dernier and prochain are tricky exceptions. They normally come before the noun, but when you are talking about "last" or "next" week or month, they come after:

Nous irons à Paris la semaine prochaine.
Nous sommes allés à Paris la semaine dernière.

I hope that this is helpful! In general, if you follow the acronym as your guide, you should be on the right track with your adjective placement. Then, over time, you will learn to recognize those exceptions!

Bon courage !
