Tu...puisses?

This "you could" phrase just popped up in my lesson yesterday. Can someone tell me where it fits with the conjugation of "could"? i.e.... je pouvais, tu -- ? puisses?, il pouvait, nous pourrions, vous pourriez, etc? Is it just an irregular verb, or am I missing something?

"Puisses" is the second person familiar subjunctive of the verb "pouvoir". I found the above in the on-line verb conjugator of the website "Français interactif". This is a very good website from the University of Texas. The site has a grammar text and other goodies for studying French. The website's URL is < www.laits.utexas.edu/fi/home >.

Hi Stefanie,

The lessons on the subjunctive (Le Subjonctif) form are here:

(seems the forum has a problem with links)

  • Part1 http://members.rocketlanguages.com/lessons/527
  • Part2 http://members.rocketlanguages.com/lessons/1057
  • Part3 http://members.rocketlanguages.com/lessons/1058

For the verbs (in French/English), use this verb2verbe.com

You can search for any form and it gives a nicely formatted result with French/English translations.

http://www.verb2verbe.com/ConjList.aspx?verb=puisses&tail=&conjLang=French&ref=0&type=query

Conjugation: puisses

Tense: subjonctif présent

Full conjugation: que tu puisses

Translation: that you be able to

Verb: pouvoir

They have an excellent iPad app also.

And once you are comfortable reading French without the English, get a copy of Antidote. It has all the tables and forms and it is completely offline.
