Is there a section where I can get some rules on use of tenses - J'avais, Je voudrais Je fera.... etc. Just for a point of reference really as to the contexts.

Get a good French Grammar book; start at the beginning; study it! Important things to look for might be: 1. logical organization of materials, clearly expressed rules/ principles 2. lots of well designed tables showing conjugations, declensions, etc. 3. Lots and lots of example sentences illustrating the specific concept presented 4. Some sort of CD or online with sound files, such that the example sentences can be heard, and then saved to your iPod as .mp3 files for later review. I like Harrap's "Sound Review of French Grammar" for the above reasons. A precaution here is that if you find a used version of this somewhere, the online access code had probably already been linked to the original owner's email, and will be of no use to you. I was lucky to find a new copy at Half Price Books for about $6 Try Amazon.dot.com.

So are verb tenses not explained anywhere in the rocket program? I bought all three levels and don't see the information relayed. In the games it assumes you already know how to conjugate. I see Michael's recommendation to go buy a book but I thought in buying this program that I was buying something that would give me all the information I would need. Are there other fundamentals I should supplement the program with? thanks!

Bonjour à tous! Hi Brad, the approach we take here at RocketLanguages is to use more of an immersion approach to the language, whereby the members absorb the language over a period of time as if you would have your native tongue. For that reason, we try to steer clear of too much grammar explanations and simply let you absorb the language. However, this is a question that has arisen before and therefore we may consider incorporating it into our lessons in the future. J'espère que cela vous aide! - I hope this helps! - Marie-Claire

I'm a bit of a grammar freak and love to study it. Along with Rocket French, I'm also studying the French grammar. If you want some extra free and/or inexpensive resources on the French grammar and verb tenses, you might check out the websites of some university language departments. The University at Texas (Austin) has a very good website on French. I live near Vancouver, Canada, near the University of the Fraser Valley. They also have French resources listed on their Modern Languages webpages.
