In the sentence - Une tarte aux pommes An apple tart - why is the apple plural?

Is this another one of those situations where direct translations don't work? In English we say apple pie when obviously it takes more than one apple to make a pie. Apple in this case becomes an adjective describing the pie. The French may take a more litteral approach and pluralize the apples because there are many apples in the pie.
