My understanding is that "au revoir" says the whole thing.

Bonjour Lance,
'Au revoir' means 'see you (next time)' and insinuates that you are likely to see that person again. 'Adieu' is far more definitive and means that you will not (or unlikely to) be seeing that person ever again.
