Salut M L,
Haha yes, two words that confuse many people. They are most often used to describe a school mate or class mate but they can mean boyfriend or girlfriend as well. Often to say boyfriend and girlfriend we will add "petit(e)" in front it, for example:
Boyfriend = Petit copain
&
Girlfriend = Petite copine
If ever you are confused simply ask by repeating the sentence but adding petit(e) in front of copain/copine and whoever you are talking to will understand your confusion and explain tout de suite.
I hope this helps!

Does Petit ami / Petite amie mean the same thing as Petit copin / Petite copine?
I have heard both being used but am not sure what the difference is.

Bonjour SisterLuna,
Yes, you can also use "petit ami" and "petite amie" to mean "boyfriend" and "girlfriend". Both are used interchangeably and as often as one another.
I hope this helps!
