As in English, the French C has a hard (K) or a soft (S) sound .
Words such as cette, vacances, or cinq have the S sound because the C is followed by the vowels E or I.
Words like coeur, café, Cuba, action and blanc have the K sound because the C is followed one of the other vowels, consonants, or no letters.
Words like garçon and français have the S sound.
The cédilla (Ç) tells the reader that the Ç has the S sound even though it isn't followed by the E or I.
