Cycling in Germany

Hi All

I read one of the cultural segments on driving and cycling in Germany. I would like to do some cycling in Germany and wondered if anyone has done so. I am keen to know more about conditions and dedicated cycling paths.  I don't want to do a guided tour, but cycle at my own spped, distance and time. I know some of the tour companies rent out bikes and deliver your luggage from place to place and are all inclusive, but they typically have time restraints.  Any suggestions out there would be appreciated. Am also considering the Netherlands (at least that is flat) So if anyone has info on that, it would also be great

Hallo Sebongela,

Cycling is a great way to explore Germany which has a extensive network of established cycle routes with dedicated cycle paths and quiet country roads. If you don't want to use a tour company, the other option would be to use bike pannier bags to take everything you need with you. Most paths are asphalt or concrete while some are gravel or occasionally cobblestone. It is also likely that you will have to cross train tracks from time to time. Many cycle routes in Germany are mostly flat even though this depends on your chosen route and the area (although the Netherlands are even flatter). Another thing to consider is the wind which is often quite strong in costal areas.

Hope this helps and maybe another member can join in and share their experiences :)

Viele Grüße

Julia

Hallo Julia

Thank you for that information. I am really keen to do some cycling in Germany. Have driven through Germany to various regions. It is really lovely and am keen to visit there again. Especially now that I feel more confident about speaking. I also want to meet my pen friend. We correspond regulary and then I can practise even more

Hi,

I completed a week long cycle trip in the Netherlands and it was great! I spent some time learning dutch, I should have learned more german as most of the other guest on the trip were German. The riding was self guided and pretty easy. The bikes are of good quality and the food was very good. We went on a clipper sailing ship. Yes, there are headwinds on the coasts of the Islmeer! We did about 40-50 km per day, which isn't really alot when you most of the day to complete your route.

Hi LauraR63

Thank you for the information. Have considered a cycling holiday in the Netherlands. There is a lovely one in the spring next year through the tulips farms. It is not self-guided, but a guided tour. I am quite happy with a guided tour, but my husband would not enjoy the social aspect. Ha we all have our idiosyncrasyies. Would you be able to let me know which tour operation you went through. We landed up not going to Germany. We decided to stay home on Vancouver Island and have fun here. Travel was just too complicated, with strikes etc.

Have a good day

Sharon

Ps Am still planning a cycling tour for next year May.
