Am intrigued by these two. How are they eaten and prepared?

Does anyone know and has anyone eaten these?

When I go to Germany am going to go and eat them for sure, plus some of the dumplings. Can't wait

Hallo Sebongela,

Thank you for your question!

Mett is raw minced pork which is traditionally eaten on a bread bun with slices of raw onion, also known as Mettbrötchen. To prepare a Mettigel you simply shape the seasoned Mett as a headgehog, use sliced onion pieces as its spikes and olives or black peppercorns as its eyes and nose. It's just a simply way to make Mett look more appealing when serving it at a buffet.

Leberkäse, is a type of meatloaf made of very finely ground beef, pork and bacon which is baked in a loaf pan until it forms a brown crust. There are lot's of ways to serve Leberkäse. Usually it is sliced and served warm on a bread bun with some mustard. You can also eat it as part of a full meal accompanied by fried popatoes and a fried egg or slice it thinly and put it on a sandwich.

Definetly two yummy meals (even though the Mett can arguably be a bit of a strange concept when you're not used to it) that are worth a try when you're in Germany!

Grüße,

Julia

Another question. Is the Mett served raw?

I am very adventurous with food, so will try both when I get to Germany again. After listening to “ Play the Part” want to try street food too.

Keep well

Hi Sebongela,

Yes, Mett is served raw. You can buy it from the meat counter at the supermarket or at the butcher's, for example. Of course, there are always some risks when eating raw meat. Hence it is recommended that certain groups of people such as pregnant, immuncompromised, elderly or small children should avoid it.

For healthy adults it's not that much of a problem but you should always make sure the Mett is fresh, e.g. keep it refrigerated and eat it on the day you bought it.

Guten Appetit!

Danke schon (umlaut missing)

I am quite amazed that they eat pork raw. Beef and lamb rare, but chicken and pork never. I find it facinating the diversity from different countries. Am quite intrigued and will try it when I go to Germany, not to mention all the different sausages. I lived in South East Asia  for 15 years and miss the diversity of so many different foods.

Hi Julia

I have found Mett in our valley and intend going to try some. we have a small German deli here in town and they have a wonderful selection of European cheeses cold cuts and lots of other lovely products. So I am off on a mission to taste some. My Austrian friend told me yesterday that they have Mett. They also have lots of sausages and delicious marzipan and senf to name a few.
