die Kneipe, das restaurant

Hi All

When in Germany we ate at a pub style restaurant. Dogs were allowed in there  (like a lot of British Pubs) Not allwed in Canada, even many patios are not pet friendly. is there a distinction between a restaurant and a pub. or between a pub and a bar.

A bar in South Africa only serves drinks and one doesn't really get pubs, only restaurants. So my question being is a “Bar” also a kneipe. Is there a word for a place that just serves drinks?

Thanks

Maxie

Hi Maxie,

Generally speaking, eine Kneipe ("a pub") is more focused on serving beer, some other alcoholic drinks and non-alcoholic drinks. Some Kneipen also offer small meals.

Eine Bar ("a bar") on the other hand, tends to serve, apart from beer, “fancier” drinks such as cocktails but no meals.

Viele Grüße,

Julia

Guten Morgan Julia

Vielen dank. When in Germany we stayed in a room. There was a Metzgerei, a very casual restaurant and rooms above. Very gemuetlich. Had a good night at a reasonable price. Is there a name for that kind of establishment. Didn't feel like a typical hotel.

Wishing you all the best during this holiday season.

Hallo Maxie,

That sounds really nice but I'm not too sure what it might have been. There is Jugendherberge ("youth hostel") which is very casual, but that usually doesn't have a proper restaurant but instead a self-service canteen. A Bed & Breakfast would be a Gästehaus in German.

Hope this helps a little.

Viele Grüße,

Julia
