Tschuess (") vs Auf Wiedersehen

Hallo

Firstly I don't know how to do an umlaut. Was told to just add an (e ) to the word. Is that correct?

Was reading a book for travelling in Germany, a general how to express yourself in various situations.

One of the things that they mentioned was:

In Austria and Bavaria “Tschuess is not used” Rather Auf Wiedersehen. Is this correct or is it just an old fasioned book?

Danke

Hallo Sebongela,

Yes, adding an “e” is perfectly fine if you don't have umlauts on your keyboard. If you do want to use them, you can find lots of instructions on how to type umlauts on an English-language keyboard online depending on your device and operating system.

In Bavaria, servus and pfiat di for “bye” are more commonly used while in Austria there are a lot of regional differences including pfiat di, tschau, pfiati or the Viennese baba. Instead of “Auf Wiedersehen”, Auf Wiederschaun “Goodbye” is more common.

Viele Grüße

Julia
