It is one of the prehistoric celebrations of India and this year it falls on March 1. “Festival of Colors”, originally celebrated by married women for a long and happy nuptial life, has changed over time and now is an occasion for merry making with colors and food, and announces the arrival of spring. On the eve of holi, a large wood pile along with a model of Holika, a woman devil, is burnt to honor the victory of righteousness over wickedness. The following day, called “Dhuleti”, is the real “colorful” day. People spray color water to each other, fling color powder, sing, dance and enjoy the day. Cold drinks are inevitable. Exchanging sweets to friends and family is also part of the celebration. Mathura and Vrindavan are well-known for holi celebrations. The celebrations vary from place to place in India, but irrespective of the style people gather to enjoy and welcome spring. Here are some tips which can be useful to play holi!
