The use of न (not ने)

Hi,

When I read Hindi books and Hindi news, sometimes I just see न stuck in the middle of a sentence like it's its own word. I also heard it used by a flight attendant on a plane. Sometimes, I wonder why it's even there, and I don't know what it means. Can you please explain the significance of the use of न by itself and its meaning?

न should be 'No' is such case. Please give the complete sentence(s) if you need more clarity.

Example:

रेलिंग पर न बैठे। 
 

रेलिंग पर न बैठे। means 'Do not sit on the railing'. 'न' is 'No'.

why is नहीं sometimes shortened to न?
