Friends warned us about a 2 step process for train tickets? They said something about having to "validate" the ticket before getting on the train. Purchasing a ticket is not enough????

If you buy a ticket for one of the faster "arrow" trains (Frecciarossa and Frecciargento), you don't have to validate it because these tickets are valid for only a specific ride on a specific train.
If you buy a ticket for a regional train, however, tickets are not personal and you will have to validate them by inserting them into one of the yellow cancelling machines that are scattered around the train station.
