I am so sick of trying to keep up with the “Jones” and the tech team is not doing anything about it. I am competitive, granted, but it is totally demotivating to zealously trying to do the right thing and not really getting anywhere. Get to a certain point and just seem to stay there. Am beginning to even doubt that some of these learners are real. Extremely frustrating. Eventually gave up on Duolingo for that very reason. I use Babbel and Ouino and neither of them have a point system. You set your own goals and frankly am more comfortable with that.

I have been experimenting with points. To achieve a score of even 4000 takes hours. Basically redoing the conversations and then the hear it and know it ones. Just not realistic to try and get more points. Not even a pace I could achieve long term. So how do people even get to the higher numbers without cheating.

Thank you for your feedback; from I recall in a chat we had, this had been clarified, correct? For a more up-to-date comparison in the Leaderboard, I'd suggest to set the board to show the last 24hours or the last 30 days for "Italian" only, as check the all time scores and languages may provide details from old accounts since 2006 or so.
Kind Regards

I have greatly increased my study time and daily points, not to win or keep up. I have Meniere's Disease and am going deaf. I now have only about 25% of hearing in one ear and a bit more in the other. This has happened since last summer (2020). I am racing against the disease to finish the Travelogues before I can no longer hear them. I love this course and have put many hours into it. I started it to be able to go to Italy and converse at some level while there. Now, because I am nearly deaf, I find it difficult to converse in my native English, so I doubt I will ever actually use the Italian in Italy that I have worked so hard to learn. My deafness will put an end to study using the recordings, but if I learn the lessons well enough I can continue to review them and say the dialog and words to myself. I don't think I will be able to have conversations with others in Italian however.

Hi
I am sorry to hear that, must be very hard for you. I have never called you out personally and at one point remarked on that I admire your tenacity. I can achieve about 4000 a day, but takes out too much time of my day. So between 2.5 and 3000 works for me. Now with Covid find I also have a lot more time on my hands, as am not going out much. With summer coming and gardening, will have less time too. When you posted something about numbers not being recognized. I was referring mostly to participants that suddenly record a mega amount of points in a matter of literally minutes. I will be near the top and then suddenly go down to 20 and for me that just seems impossible. I enjoy my Italian immensely, and if I stick to my minimum points of 400 just don't feel as though I have achieved much that day. I did try to walk away from points and do the bare minimum for a few days and it just didn't work for me. I like to be at least in the top 10. I enjoy corresponding and if it is allowed would happily give out my email address. Am in Canada on the west coast.

The points do jump around, as they are the total for the past 24 hours. So if you did a lot the previous afternoon, your points will be relatively high the second afternoon. But if you did not do anything on the afternoon of the previous day, your points can decrease by a lot on the second afternoon. I have been working with points in a certain range, and then after I work a while I check again and my points are lower than when I started.

I have given up on looking at the points too closely. Just became too stressful. I now do what I enjoy doing, which is between 2000 and 3000. Covid has freed up a lot of my time, we live on Vancouver island. In winter it rains incessantly, so this winter was mostly home, with a result my Italian has grown in leaps and bounds. Gardening season is starting, so less time. Again congratulations on the 1000 days, well 1001today. Hope I have that self discipline to get there
