Recording often cuts off before I've finished

Hi,

I often find when I pause naturally in a sentence, that the recording finishes and marks me at 50% or less because I haven't finished. In 6.5, there are a number of longer sentences. If I say them with pauses like the originals, the recording cuts off every time. I find that the only way I can finish is by leaving no pauses between sentences at all, which doesn't feel like natural language.

Hi Drewster,

Thank you for your post.  Our apologies for any inconvenience caused.  There are two things happening at the same time whenever you record something on our site.  Firstly, is the recording itself, and separately is the processing of the voice recognition feature.  Unfortunately if you leave pauses when repeating sentences, the system will assume that you have finished speaking and so will begin to process the voice recognition results.  I will speak to the IT team about whether it's possible to increase the pause threshold.

Hi Drewster,

I have heard back from my colleagues in the IT team, and unfortunately we are unable to increase the pause threshold I'm sorry.  However, at some point we will look into splitting any very long sentences into smaller parts to make it easier for the recording.  In the meantime, please continue to repeat the phrases without leaving pauses.  I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Hi Margaret,

Thanks for asking about it. I just have to persevere with them I guess but it is a pain.

Splitting the sentences would be helpful. In a lot of those in Lesson 6 (in 6.5 for example) the sentences are quite long and very difficult to remember for a beginner.

Thanks,
Drew

Hi Margaret,

Something for your IT team: I decided to try an experiment. At the end of 6.5 there are a number of longer sentences as said above. With earphones in, I started the recording at the same time as playing the speaker and read the phrases at exactly the same speed at which they are narrated. It's not possible to complete any of them. So, it doesn't work for these .. they need to come up with a better system.

Cheers,
Drew

Thank you thank you everyone!  I was going crazy trying to get all the words in the time I was given.  Now I don't feel so bad.  Love the learning but so tense when I thought I was just too slow.  Thought the time it took for them to say the sentence was longer than I had but kept thinking it must be me.  Yes, I can relax now!  I'm so competitive with myself!
Otherwise I'm learning a lot and love Rocket Italian!!!
Ciao!

Hi Drew and Connie,

Apologies for the confusion.  Unfortunately the voice recognition feature doesn't actually take into account any pauses in the original recording of the sentence.  All it hears is your own recording, and if YOU pause, it will assume that you are finished.  It shouldn't mean that you have to rush through the sentence - if you speak slowly, but without leaving pauses (even if the tutor does), you shouldn't be cut off early.

As I mentioned, we will be starting to split the longer sentences into smaller parts in the not-too-distant future.  In the meantime, if you feel that you repeated a sentence well, and do not agree with the rating given by the system, you can always override it and choose a more appropriate rating.

I hope that helps!
