Translation of "per fare una bella cena ai miei amici"

In lesson 6.1, "per fare una bella cena ai miei amici" is translated as "to make a good dinner for my friends. 

Should it be written "per i miei amici" instead of "ai miei amici", which I believe means " to my friends"?

In this specific case, the segments "ai miei amici" and "per i miei amici" are interchangeable, as they both mean that "I am going to make dinner for my friends".  Literally, the corresponding English text should be "to my friends", as you correctly stated.
