TIL the name "Hagibis" is from the Philippines (Tagalog?) and means "rapidity" or "swiftness". I hope everyone in the projected path is taking safety precautions. Western news coverage indicates a monster storm.

I saw the damage on TV Japan today, and it's pretty bad and covers nearly the whole country. There is a lot of flooding involved and people dead and missing/unidentified. The pictures were sad with washed out bridges and roads.

The satellite images of the storm were stunning. It's such a pity that such awe inspiring nature causes huge amounts of destruction and loss of life.

They really are. I've been watching most of the afternoon, and the number of dead and unaccounted for just keep going up. The flooding is awful.
