So the local university, University of Wisconsin, is currently showing two kabuki plays today and I got to watch it thanks to the generosity of the kind lady who basically is helping me through the application, preparation and more processes of my foreign exchange experience.
The plays we watched were "The Zen Substitute" (身替座禅) and "Narukami - The Thunder God" (鳴神). Despite being translated into English, everything flowed quite well. I truly had the sense that this may be what Kabuki is like in Japan. However, I sincerely doubt they matched the professional experience the kabuki actors in Japan would perform with. On top of that, being westerners we didn't really understand the concept of the crowd interaction and so that was done through audio cues played through speakers instead. Overall it was a great experience, and if a kabuki play is available in your town I highly recommend you watch it.
I'm not going into the details of the plot other than in Narukami it's basically a priest who gets seduced then ticked off because he was seduced. Then in The Zen Substitute the plot was more a gag on a husband who tricked his wife into letting him go see another female and in the end the husband pays for it.
While I'm in Japan I really hope I get the chance to go to a kabuki play xD.

デレックさん、
What a great opportunity you had to go and see Kabuki!
Even Japanese people don't get to see Kabuki often - if at all!! (it's quite expensive).
Was the Kabuki actors Japanese?
It's great to hear that you are able to see and experience Japanese culture even before you come to Japan.
-Enjoy!

こんにちはさやかさん、
The actors were college students, and sadly they didn't follow the "male-only" requirement found in kabuki. As a matter of fact most of the actors were female with the except of two males. Other than that, it was very well done.
