Portuguese pronunciation of s and d

sabanita

sabanita

Hi! I'm just starting to learn Portuguese and I found the male and female voice different when pronouncing the same word. For example- 1) The "s" in esta --> is it [esta] or [eshta]? 2) The "d" in de onde --> is it [de onde] or [dje ondje]? Thanks a lot!!

Hi Sabanita, This difference is an accent from different parts of Brazil. The "cariocas" or people who living in Rio de Janeiro tend to get more emphasis on "s" and the "e" sounds like the English "e" sometimes, but both are saying "esta" and "de onde" this is the correct way to write. Hope this helps :)
