Are there different ways of saying hello in Portuguese? Is it too informal to say “Oi” when greeting someone I haven’t met before?

Yes, there are different ways of saying hello in Portuguese, like "Ola", but "Oi" is just fine, even when you meet someone for the first time.

You are completely right, the word "olá" should have acute accent on top of the letter "a".
