I bought Rocket Chinese to learn very basic Mandarin and am not disappointed. I was thrilled when after using the program only several times I was able to speak out aloud and be understood by native Chinese!
I have been using the Genki textbook to learn Japanese, but I find this program to be more effective in that it provides explanations as well as prerecorded conversations so that one may practice conversational Japanese even when there is no one else to practice with. Love this program!
Rocket German is a very addicting (in a good way) course! It is no effort at all to do the lessons. My son, who completed two years of high school German and three years of college German can't believe how fast I've gotten the point of being able to have a conversation with him. We both try to speak German as much as possible around the house just for fun. We plan on traveling to Germany in about two years, and I can't wait to try out my new language skills!
I was pleasantly surprised by Rocket Japanese, I had tried other language learning websites before. But, none of them gave me the feeling of control that Rocket Japanese gives. With this website I can choose what I want to learn: when, for how long, and how much I want to cover. I think anyone serious about Rocket Japanese should at least give it a try.
Absolutely wonderful product... I'm already a native speaker and was looking at some language courses to see how to better approach my other language learning endeavors - thanks to Rocket Languages, I don't have to worry about some of the more fundamental problems like pronunciation, vocabulary cards and learning retention - it's all here!
This is a great way to brush up on my school French that I learned many years ago. I am getting ready for a three week trip to France. Allons-y! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
You should try as many resources as possible when learning a new language. Prior to Rocket Languages, I consulted a textbook, Rosetta Stone software, and Pimsleur audio lessons. The Rocket Languages program is the most balanced approach, when it comes to learning styles.
Textbook
+ Index and dictionary
+ Many opportunities for explanation and background information
- Very linear
- Not immersive
Rosetta Stone
+ The most vocabulary
+ Visual reinforcement through images
+ Very slick interface
- No English
- No explanations
- Images are bad at expressing multiple ideas
- Images are bad at expressing time and use of tenses
- The grading scale is unhelpful
Audible
+ Efficient explanations
+ Easy progression in small steps
+ Lots of repetition
- The reading lessons are tacked on at the end
- Poor exposure to the written word
- Poor explanation of tenses
Rocket Languages
+ Listening, Reading, and Speaking functionality is strongly integrated
+ High quality audio
+ PDF handouts and downloads make it easy to learn away from the computer
+ Curriculum offers multiple definitions, when appropriate
- The progression is a little fast
- Needs more repetition within the audio lessons
- Maybe pair the audio lessons with a slideshow for visual reinforcement?
Rocket Languages is the best value, when compared to other learning solutions. I will go to Rocket Languages first when I try my next language.
I use Rocket German on my iPod while I'm on the road driving or walking. I enjoy the voices of the familiar Rocket characters, Nik and Paul. I especially appreciate the quirky humor that's worked into each lesson. Thanks guys! You make learning fun!
I am having a lot of fun with Rocket German, and next, Rocket Spanish. This program is pretty great. I hope lots of people make use of it. Other programs I have tried did not compare.
So far I've had no problems with this program mi novia is mexican and this program gives me a chance to try and learn more spanish so I can communicate better with her family and be more educated in their culture, it's awesome!
