I've asked myself this same question before. Like Bobby said watching movies with Spanish audio helps. I'd recommend actions movies, seems to be a lot of commands and short phrases in them.

Learning the lyrics of songs helps. You end up with some phrases that really stick in your mind. Cantad unas canciones y recordareis mas oraciones.

My spanish is reasonable but no good enough. I am in Peru for 4 months every year and I can understand spanish in Cusco but not in the jungle. The locals tell me that i need to "educate my ears." I think they speal a mix of spanish and local dialects - it is very difficult to understand. Any clues?

Hmm the different pronouciations of Spanish yeh they worry me a little. I read that in Argentina sometimes the letters D and R aren't pronouced due to the indians infuence on the language. I can imagine Comido and Comió being hard to distinguish, but you'd eventually get use to it. Also 'LL' has three different pronouciations! I have a few south american friends that say English is like this as well, and you just eventually pick it up. The locals are right we do need to train our ears, 'it's from listening that we learn', an Argentinian has also told me that.

I just found the site http://www.jango.com. It is a site that lets you listen to all types of music. There is lyrics for some of them. It appears to be a free site but it does have a lot of commercials. You can also download the songs as a ringtone (for a price I suspect). I just signed up (they want your email addy and you must provide a password). If you have trouble finding a band that plays Spanish, try searching for Banda Machos.

VLC media player! It is free and allows you to change the speed of any media (video, audio formats). I use it all the time to watch lectures at faster than normal speeds for school, but it can work the other way too. It works well with the mp3 in the lessons here. Voices sound clear at any reasonable speed.
