Is the word "Yo" pronounced with a y or j sound? I have been hearing many inconsistencies depending on the person, and even though I know both are understood, which one is actually the correct one to use?

I think the "correct" pronunciation is with a ''Y'' sound, as in the english ''yellow." But in practice it seems that many native speakers give it a harder, closer to ''J''sound. So I guess the answer to your question is, either is correct.
For me as a native English speaker learning Spanish, It feels like an affectation to say "Joe"or "Cho," sort of like a Yankee saying "Ya'll." I notice many differences in the way Mauricio and Amy speak Spanish and take my cues from her.
And lately I have been listening to some podcasts done by a woman from Spain and a Brit who has lived in Spain for 9 years. It has made me very aware of the differences in the way in which certain letters are pronounced in Spain and Latin American countries.

I've been trying to develop a better ear so lately I have been listening to various programming and noticed that many native speakers pronounce it with a j sound, as in "joe" as opposed to the y sound. I'm just a beginner of Rocket Spanish but in listening to Mauricio, he also says Yo with a j sound. It's very soft but it's there, and I wasn't able to hear it until I put on headsets.

As I press on through the course, now I hear Mauricio sometimes pronounce "Yo" with the y sound. This is indeed inconsistent even with native speakers. So, I guess it doesn't matter? Just choose a way and go with it? Is there anyone else with thoughts about this?
