Why did Mauricio use the word hermanos for sibling as well as brother?

Hermanos can refer to both siblings (brothers and sisters), as well as brothers (plural). If you have a brother and a sister you would say "tengo dos hermanos", or "tengo uno hermano y uno hermana" The same is true for children, ninos (sorry, i have no idea how to get the tilde on here) can be multiple children of both sexes, or more than one male child. ninas would be more than one female children.
