From my experience, most people are highly appreciative of the effort you have put into learning a language and are excited to be able to share it with you. 

 

However, there are occasional exceptions to this, particularly in fast-paced work environments such as front of house. That said, I encourage you not to feel bad about such experiences. Just try to be to the point and consider what you are going to say ahead of time to avoid feeling put on the spot. 

 

Intercultural and interlingual communication is always challenging but really beneficial and opens up new perspectives. As a learner, it is important to give yourself leniency and use these experiences to grow.

There have definitely been situations where a basic knowledge was super helpful (the server didn't speak any English) but I always respected if someone switched to English in a work (for them) situation.
