Question on Interactive 1.3

Hi there, This is probably a stupid question, but in the Interactive Audio course 1.3, there is a line: "Quiero algo para tomar." In the English section, this is translated as "I want some thing to drink." According to my Spanish Verb app on my phone, "beber" is "to drink" and "tomar" is "to take." What am I missing here? Thanks!

Hola Thane. Yes, "tomar" can mean to take, but it's also often used in exactly the way you heard it in the Audio course. In some places "beber" is used more often, in others "tomar." Speaking just for myself, I've heard "Quiero algo para tomar" (as well as the question ¿Quieres algo para tomar?) much more often than the same question with "beber."

Muchas gracias! I appreciate you taking the time to explain that.

If i'm not mistaken, beber is used in Spain, tomar in South America. Tomar in Mexico, Beber in Madrid. Why not? Pablo.

I have just started the spanish course - Reference the Tomar/Bebe comments, I live in Tenerife and have found quite a few words in Rocket that are Latin american Spanish, not mainland Spanish. For example, in section 1.6, the word 1.7 the car is "carro", whereas I know it as "coche". This is going to get confusing for me I think!

I know what you are talking about Peter R, in my Spanish class at school, we learned carro, and i looked this up on Google Translate, and it said coche! I don't know about you, but I'm sticking with carro.

Hey guys, my question is using the words "soy" and "estoy". I know that both mean "i am". When do I use which word? For example both are used: "soy un missionaro" and "estoy aprendiendo".

Hola, Estar often refers to a temporary condition, while ser frequently refers to a permanent condition. for example Estoy cansado, I am tired. Soy cansado, I am a tired person. Estoy feliz, I'm happy now. Soy feliz, I am happy by nature.
