Where to practice conversational space in real time?

Hola amigos.

Where would you suggest practicing conversational Spanish in real time online?  There are not many Spanish speakers in the community I live in in Western Canada and I'd love the opportunity to practice.

Muchas Gracias

Hola Kristen,

You could try italki. I've never used it, so I don't know a lot about it. However, I've heard you can pay for lessons from teachers/tutors and find free language exchange partners on there. Either option would probably provide you with some good practice conversing in Spanish.

Otherwise, I don't have any suggestions, sorry! Maybe someone else will. Either way, I hope you find a good way to practice.

¡Buena suerte!

Just wanted to add: I was curious, so I did a little bit of research, and I found out that HelloTalk and Tandem are both pretty popular language-exchange apps. (Warning: Apparently, getting unwanted flirtatious messages is a pretty common issue with Tandem and HelloTalk.) Both have free and paid versions with various features that the other does not have. People prefer each app for various reasons, so it's definitely worth looking for more information on your own if you're interested. There are tons of reviews on places like YouTube where people give an in-depth look at the apps and some even directly compare the two if that's something you're interested in.

Hola, Kristen,

I'm glad you asked that question. If there's an app other than the ones already mentioned--good suggestions but none appealed to me--I'd be really glad to hear about it. I don't want to pay, and I don't really want to chat with young singles unless their interests are broader than dating, sports, and pop culture.  If it's permitted, perhaps Mauricio or one of his team can tell us if there's any way via Rocket Spanish a student interested in conversing in Spanish can safely share with another interested student just enough info for the two to know if they have enough similar interests and goals to give it a try.

¡Hola, Kristen (otra vez) y Kathleen!

I doubt this will help with the whole “young singles” issue (but IDK maybe it will; I haven't really looked at these because I'm not looking for a language partner), but I stumbled across these a few days ago:

https://www.reddit.com/r/LanguageBuds/

https://www.reddit.com/r/language_exchange/

I've also heard people mention a site called MyLanguageExchange as means of finding language partner. Also, apparently some people use Meetup and Facebook to find local language groups (of course, these two options are probably less viable if there aren't any Spanish speakers near you).

Unfortunately, I don't really have anything to say about whether these are good options or not. I have only heard of them in passing while looking for other information, but it could be worth it for you to research them a bit and see if you like the look of them.

I'm sorry I don't have more information, but I wasn't planning on posting here again, so I didn't do much (i.e., any) research when I first heard of them (and I'm too lazy to do it now). Hopefully one of these is a better option for you two. If not, I hope you both eventually find one that works for you!
