Suddenly having lots of problems being understood

Wondering if something changed in the Speaking part of the program. Occasionally it takes several tries to get it to recognize what i am saying. When i play it back, it sounds ok, but the text shown is crazy stuff. It does not happen very often, but it is extremely frustrating when it does. This just started yesterday for me.

If nothing changed, then what can i tweak to improved things?

I've noticed the same thing since the latest upgrade, but my perception is that it is a minor difference. but noticeable all the same.

I have not noticed any difference, but I have always had good luck with it. Most of the time. For some reason, it really hates how I say hielo.

I went trhough my current lesson again today and to be fair, didn't notice any difference in the average rate of unrecognised spoken words.  There was a higher rate soon after the upgrade, but certainly not now.

I haven't noticed more problems than I've always had.  If the speech recognition seems really goofy, I skip over the phrase, then come back to it a minute later and it's fine.  I use a logitech microphone, not headphones, and thought that might be the problem, but I had the same problem with headphones.  If anyone has an answer I'd love to hear  it!

I always keep in mind the first issue could be the way I am pronouncing it. Without a native speaker to provide you feedback, it is tough to tell for sure, but often if I adjust my accent to be closer to the native speaker recording, it often results in a good recording.  From my conversations with native speakers, I think we typically believe our accent is better than it really is. Think of non-native speakers of your language - you can instantly tell they are not a native speaker and sometimes even thought they are speaking perfectly, they are tough to understand.

Good point.  I'm about through the first Level in Rocket.  Think I would be smart to stop there, and focus on making sure I really understand what I've learned so far, and improving my communication skills.    I plan on taking some online lessons with a native speaker focusing on conversation, and upping the amount of time I spend listening to Italian podcasts, movies etc.  There are a lot of resources out there.

That would definitely be helpful. I moved right on to Level 2 (Spanish for me) and I am finding it much more difficult to get through. It takes a big leap forward in grammar (which is good, but challenging) and I am not good at all at listening to native speakers, so I have been working on that (movies and podcasts do seem to be helping me). IMO, building listening skills is a weakness of Rocket Language. I still think it is the best self-paced platform out there, but nothing is perfect.

Hi Margie-ftqu and everyone else on this thread (I love what a supportive community we have here on the forum!),

Firstly, here are the things we always recommend for anyone having voice recognition issues:
1. An updated version of the app or Chrome/Safari browsers
2. A fast internet connection
3. A quiet space and compatible earphones/headset

We use the same voice recognition software that is used by the likes of Google. However, there are still some flaws, most often with short or single syllable words. We understand that voice recognition issues can be very frustrating. Our IT team is working on a solution to this ongoing issue, but it might be some months before you see these changes in your courses. If you are struggling to get some of the shorter words picked up, we would suggest skipping over them for now. If you are confident you are saying the word correctly (which you can easily assess with short words) you can simply reveal and mark these phrases as "easy" in the activities section.

I hope that helps!
