Had no idea what you were talking about. So looked it up. Basically a pestle and mortar. In Africa they grind corn on a stone and I believe they grind on stone in India as well. I have a wooden one inherited from my mom. She used to grind garlic with olive oil in there. Works beautifully and the smell of garlic still permeates it. Reminds me of my childhood. In South Africa trditionally the also had a deep bowl made of wood and the women each had a stamping stick. They take it in turns to flatten the grain and singing while doing it.
I guess those implements go back thousands of years.
