Un fin de semana en Bolivia

A little over a week ago, my wife and I went to La Paz, Bolivia for the weekend.  When I went in 2015 they had completed 3 tram lines in the city.  Now there are 2 and half more lines completed with several others in the works.  It's part of the public transportation system, but it is also a relaxing way to the see the city from above.  The cost is a measly 3 bolivianos to ride per tram line.  That comes out to roughly 50 cents.  To get to La Paz we crossed the border at a little town on Lake Titicaca called Desaguadero (which is similar a desagüe or drain.)  It is, after all, where the river leaves the lake and therefore is the "drain."  The trip from Arequipa to Desaguadero was in bus and we took a taxi or colectivo from Desaguadero to La Paz.  The area around Lake Titicaca is very flat and very high.  Google Earth has the lake elevation at 12,530 feet.  The area around the lake and the city of Puno is known as el altiplano (the high plain) and it makes the high plains of Wyoming seem very low in comparison.  It's well worth the effort to visit as it's not only beautiful but there are several things to do and/or see in this border region of Peru and Bolivia.

I stayed in Puno and Juliaca for several months on my trip many years ago.  I also took that trip to La Paz, Bolivia, although it sounds much more developed than it was (38 years ago).  If I remember right, I took the trip from Puno to La Paz by a collective taxi that they called a "comite", but I could  be mistaken on that term.  My spanish back then was close to non-existent.  Such a beautiful area, the altiplano.  I hiked all over the place, and didn't even notice the altitude back then.  Ah...to be 20 again!  LOL.   I think I need to dig out my pictures and take a trip down memory lane.

Sí Esteben, he ido.  Las islas son muy interesantes.  No fui en este viaje pero fui en 2017.  Y no es muy caro si me acuerdo bien.

Sí, me acuerdo de Esteben: muy interesante. Una pregunta: ¿estás aclimatado a la altura? Fui al volcan Irazu en Costa Rica que es una altura paracido y tuve dificultades en respirando.

Sí Dan.  He pasado por lugares altos muchas veces acá.  Unas veces he sentido la falta de oxígeno.  Pero nunca me sentí que no podía continuar.  Algunas personas incluyendo a Peruanos no pueden tolerar las alturas y tienen problemas graves con el corazón y/o el respirar.
  
​Muchas veces he viajado de Arequipa a Chivay.  El paso es 16,000 ft.  Una vez en 2015, me quedé en un pueblo 3 días con la altura de 15,600 y cruzamos un paso de 16,400 para salir. Este paso está en un desierto de dunas y fue muy interesante pasar por las dunas (6 millas en una altura mas o menos de 15,900 ft).

Jeff: Estoy empezando a pensar de asistir clases de español en Sudamerica. Hoy aprendí de una escuela en Cusco se llama "Máximo Nivel." ¿Conoces esta escuela, y tienes una opinión que puedes compartir conmigo? También, ¿conoces otras escuelas que debo investigar, en Perú o otros países? Gracias por alguna información.

Dan: Fui a su pagina web y me parece bien.  Sin embargo es la primera vez que he oído de ella.

​Asistí un instituto acá en Arequipa, se llama ABC Español. http://www.abcperu.org  Su pagina no es la mejor, pero tiene sus contactos.  Su meta es enseñar a misioneros español, pero creo que no te diría "no", especialmente ahora porque faltan estudiantes.

Jeff: gracias por la información. Voy a investigar estas escuelas. Mis planes de estudiar en Sudamerica están un año en el futuro, por lo menos.
